Most descriptions
of these kinds of paintings claim that Venus is looking at herself in the
mirror. Actually, Venus is not looking at herself - Venus is looking at the
painter or the viewer. The fact that people assume she's looking at herself is
due to what's known as 'The Venus Effect'.
