I have been designing and making Temori
Dolls (toy-like art pieces) for eight years now. I call them Temori Dolls
because at first, my concept was to make cute miniature dolls. The name Temori
Adyashi was stuck to them instantly, because at the time I was in South Korea
(studying) and Temori Adyashi 대머리 아저씨 means
"a bald guy" in Korean- the
concept itself was a funny one.
After
I moved to South Africa where I modified the name to Temori Dolls and I started
making dolls that are connected to art pieces, characters in the art history as
well as characters from contemporary paintings or sculptures. That was also a
funny concept, so it was a success among artists and curators. The exhibition
was in David Krut Gallery as well as at the annual Art Fair Johannesburg.
In
Serbia I had one solo exhibition where all the dolls were connected to art
pieces or scenes from the Bible. They all showed suffering and pain. The look
of the dolls never changed so they all belong to one project.
This time 대머리 아저씨 is back to South Korea. Instead of being only a cute character, he evolved and
changed into artistic statement for me.
I
made 518 so far. It is a little complicated, but they follow me wherever I go,
and also, I am learning about traditions in sewing and fabrics wherever I go.
I
make them myself and each one from the temoridolls.blogspot.com was made only ones. The fabrics I buy are mainly from Japan and
Kenya, a lot from Korea and China, also Botzwana and Tanzania, France, Serbia
and Thailand.
